It is a manufactured synthetic
fiber in which the fiber forming substance synthetic polymer composed of at
least 85% acrylonitrile units by weight.
Chemical names of Acrylic Fiber:
- Orlen.
- Acrilan.
- Creslam.
- Zefran.
Physical preparation of acrylic
fiber:
- Tenacity: Dry= 5gm/den, wet= 4.8gm/den.
- Elongation: Dry=16%, Wet= 17%.
- Moisture regain: 1-2%.
- Flammability: More flammable, burns rapidly with bright yellow flames.
- Abrasion resistance: Good.
- Dimensional stability: Good.
- Color: Dull.
- Diameter: 15μm to 25µm.
Chemical properties of Acrylic
Fiber:
- Effect of acid: Damage by strong concentrated acid.
- Alkali: Affected by strong alkaline.
- Bleaches: Resistance to bleach.
- Heat: Most heat sensitive.
- Dye: Acid, basic.
- Light: Resistance not for less time.
Uses of Acrylic Fiber:
- All acrylic fibers used in knitted and woven fabrics.
- Blends of acrylic fibers with wool, cotton etc.
- End uses such as blankets, carpets and upholstery.
- Popular in sports wear, ski cloths, children snow suit.
- Used in industrial applications like filter cloth, protective cloth.
